Many women, of all ethnicities, wear hair weaves and human hair extensions. It isn’t just a “black thing”. I know in the St. Louis area we tend to see this more with the African-American women, but if you pay a little more attention you will notice that other women do too.

I can suggest some reasons why she may chose to wear a weave, but the only way to know for certain why she does is to ask her. Make sure you ask in a respectful manner and do not make jokes or anything that can be taken in a negative way, remember you do not want to get dumped!

Your girlfriend may wear “fake hair” (synthetic hair) or “real hair” (human hair) that isn’t hers simply because it is convenient. Having a weave is a lot easier to maintain and it doesn’t damage her real hair with the excessive use of heat and styling products. Another reason is wearing a weave may help her natural hair grow out to a desired length. Some African-American women damage their hair by over processing it to achieve what is proclaimed “good hair”. Getting her hair healthy again means cutting out those routines. Also she can experiment with new styles if she doesn’t like it she can simply take it out. If she is debating wearing a short cut but not sure how it will look she can get her weave cut into the style if it doesn’t suit her no worries. She may do it because it boosts her self-esteem. It isn’t necessarily about getting a weave to have long hair or because she’s envious of those with “good hair”, it’s about feeling good. Don’t sound pushy or like you’re downing her current style, but if you think she looks great without it say so! Maybe no one has told her she looks amazing the way she is.
